Compound feed
In the current conditions of economic development of Ukraine's agro-industrial complex, the compound feed industry plays an important role. This sector is an element that connects the production chain between raw material suppliers and consumers of animal products and plays a crucial role in providing livestock enterprises with feeds. Therefore, it is extremely important to pay attention to compound feed quality, especially when it is the main type of feed for agricultural animals and poultry. Proper nutrition supports their health and normal growth through essential nutrients.
Setting Up the Compound Feed Production Process
With the development of the compound feed industry, farming operations have completely transferred responsibility for animal feed quality to the manufacturer. The question of purchasing modern feed machinery for compound feed production has become relevant, as it is a key factor in ensuring high quality and efficiency of the final nutrition product for animals in various groups. When selecting equipment, it is necessary to clearly understand what stages the future production cycle will consist of, what raw materials are needed for manufacturing different types of compound feed, and what finished products you will be able to obtain using specific machinery.
Forms and Types of Compound Feed Products
When starting your own compound feed production, you need to determine the type of raw materials. Today there is an opportunity to work with raw materials in the form of individual components intended for subsequent dosing and mixing according to a specific formulation, or in the form of ready-mixed feeds tailored to the nutritional needs of specific animal species.
Depending on the purpose, combination of components, and equipment used, the final product of compound feed production can take the form of:
-
Compact blocks with a long shelf life. They are easy to transport and help control the amount of feed consumed by animals;
-
Liquid feed, suitable for certain animal species, but requiring additional effort for dosing and storage;
-
Dry mixes, which are easy to store and use. However, not all animals are able to digest feed of this consistency;
-
Pelletized feed, considered the most efficient and convenient form for animal feeding.

Pelletized Feed and Its Advantages
Although producing pelletized compound feed is more costly than other forms, it offers the greatest number of advantages:
-
Prevents selective feeding by providing a balanced combination of essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals in every pellet;
-
Improves digestibility thanks to the innovative pelleting process. The starch in grains and roughage is transformed into dextrins, resulting in a product that is easier to absorb while maintaining the optimal nutritional balance;
-
Masks unpleasant smells or colors of valuable ingredients and ensures their even distribution within the feed. For instance, bottom sediment used as a sorbent, or medications intended to support gut health in young animals after weaning;
-
Resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations due to its free-flowing nature. Pellets do not clump or freeze, and they allow long-term storage without the risk of separation, which is often a problem with non-pelletized feeds;
-
Easier to transport and distribute, with minimal feed loss during handling and the ability to support automatic feeding systems on farms;
-
Improves microclimate in buildings where animals are kept. High-quality pellets produce minimal dust, keeping feeding areas cleaner and helping to prevent the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. During pelleted mixture distribution, dust contamination is minimized unlike using conventionally ground grain;
-
Provides protection against rancidity using vegetable oils with natural antioxidants — vitamins A and E. They create a protective film on the surface of each pellet that prevents rapid rancidity of fats contained in corn, soybean meal, and sunflower meal;
-
Prevents the development of harmful bacteria, viruses, and molds in the feed, which can produce toxins dangerous to both animals and humans.

Stages of Pelleted Feed Manufacturing
To ensure quality product manufacturing, it is necessary to thoroughly set up each link in production and standardize the production cycle. We propose familiarizing yourself with its key stages:
-
Grinding.
At the initial grinding stage, hammer mills are used to break down grains, roughage, and plant meal into small particles. A screen system is used to separate flour or fine grain particles from the feed mixture. After grinding, a conveyor directs the resulting mass to a bin for further use. -
Dosing and Mixing.
During the mixing phase, dosing units measure the exact amounts of various ingredients—such as vitamins, feed additives, and other components—relative to the total feed mass. A feed mixer then thoroughly blends the ingredients to ensure a homogeneous final product suitable for animal consumption. -
Pelletizing.
In the pelletizing stage, press rollers force the uniform feed mash through a pellet die. The hole size of the die determines the diameter and length of the resulting pellets.
-
Cooling.
Fresh, newly manufactured pellets are directed by conveyor to a special cooling column. This allows preservation of all beneficial substances contained in the pellet. At this same stage, fine particles are screened out and the product is cleaned of dust through a special screen. -
Packaging.
Finished product packaging is performed using weight dosers. Packages are sealed or sewn closed. Each batch of compound feed is stamped with manufacturing date as well as information about composition, manufacturer, production facilities, etc.
